Cord Blood Banking

During pregnancy, you may receive information regarding cord blood banking. Deciding to bank your baby’s cord blood is a personal decision that must be made ahead of time (prior to delivery). Cord blood contains stem cells, cells which have the potential to transform into many other types of cells. Cord blood is currently being studied for use in treating many disorders, including spinal cord injuries, diabetes and disorders of the bloodstream.

Cord blood can be banked publicly or privately. Private cord blood banking is where the patient stores their child’s cord blood specifically for their own use. Public banking involves donation of the cord blood for use in unrelated individuals or for research purposes. Currently public banking is not available at Northside Hospital, but may become available in the future.
